Discover the Play+ Universe

Play+ is more than a training method. It’s an exploration through a universe where dogs and handlers engage in a profound, dynamic dance of learning, interaction, and growth.

Play+ gamifies training for dog and handler. You (and the dog) learn what a game is and how to start one as the team experiences and embodies key elements of play. How to construct the rules to get cooperative Performance? How to construct the rules for more or less intensity? Sharper or softer work?

How about a game that develops the skills for our unicorn trick? How do we create the idea, train the actions, and develop the skill of Initiative (conscious turn taking) in cooperative play?

What can one do with such ideas and experiences? Don’t just pass these thoughts by… Do you know how to do these things? Anyone ever teach you about this stuff?

Your dog does have a brain. Your dog does have feelings. How you move and act matters; much more that ‘Reward Schedule’. Your dog plans, your dog knows what is coming. Your dog knows far more than they can do. Tap into this and have a good time doing it and create a thoughtful teammate with Play+.

Why Choose Play+ ?

Core Concepts

1. Primal Games:

  • Embodied Play Experiences: These 7 elemental games offer real-world experiences that teach both dogs and handlers the subtleties of play and learning.
  • Structured Learning: Games are designed to be replayed, explored, and mastered, providing both new and experienced teams with continuous growth opportunities.
  • Live Play with Low Stakes: Primal Games deliver actual experience of purpose driven play. The games are low stakes, they’re silly and unimportant on their own so they enable Live Play. It becomes easy for dog and handler to fall into a session of authentic Play.

2. The Play+ Framework:

  • Actual World vs. Ideal World: Engage with the real-world experiences and the idealized concepts that shape behavior. Learn how to get out in and out of your head quickly & Efficiently.
  • Perception Action Cycle: Information from the field is required to turn behaviors into adaptable skills. Skills are behaviors (actions in Play+) that are coupled to the handler and the environment. Read & Recall key moments of interaction and process and adapt skills to fit the environment.
  • Mental and Physical Flow: Cognitive engagement and physical action are required for Flow. With Play+ we tune to Flow by creating & leveraging physical or mental challenge. Physical is Classical Conditioning & Action, Mental is Operant & Skill Exploration; For the Training nerds: we run, tune, and manage Classical & Operant at the same time.

3. The Science of Play:

  • Flow Theory: Apply Csikszentmihalyi’s principles to achieve optimal engagement and performance in training sessions.
  • Classical and Operant Conditioning: Seamlessly integrate Pavlovian and Skinnerian methods to create a robust training framework.
  • Affective Neuroscience: Based on concepts like SEEKING, PLAY, and other emotional systems to map the training process. Play+ maps to all 7 mammalian affects.

4. Attunement and Affordances:

  • Affective Attunement: Foster a deep emotional connection between handler and dog, ensuring each session is tailored to the dog’s current state and needs.
  • Affordances and Action Capacities: Leverage the environment and the dog’s innate capabilities to unlock new possibilities for interaction and learning.
